The keynote speaker Ryan Singer of 37 Signals spoke on the future web app interface design. Two issues Ryan sees coming up over and over again:

1. Designers aren't working with Programmers: The lack of communication between designers and developers leads to weak products. He explains how designers at 37 Signals get involved in the software process from the start. He believes in empowering designers by no longer having them just hand off pixelperfect designs but to take a stab at the code and therefore not giving up control. Like in so many of his talks before, he iterated the system they have in place which basically skips designing in photoshop files alltogether. They go straight to html and only use photoshop occasionaly by taking screenshots of their html mockup to quicky experiment with typography, colors etc. They then proceed to trash the psds.

2. Designers don't explain their decisions:
There's this perception designers are creative and therefore irrational people that can't explain what they do and why they do it. Rarely do we find a designer that can explain. We, the designers, have to make things clear and we have to make sure we can explain our decisions along the way. Designers aren 't just making applications pretty, we have to make them useful. We have to inject usability and sense into an Interface Design. And while doing this, we have to always keep in mind WHY? We have to open the door to conversation and make an effort to explain ourselves rationaly.

His message to fellow designers:
Explain why. Identify arbitrary versus meaningful decisions. Explain cause and effect. We have to show our expertise above of making things pretty. Designers who can work directly with developers and explain their rationale are in demand.

we used to live near the harbour of antwerp.
last week went for a stroll in the old hood. Shocked and confused when i saw what the mas museum was turning into. The fact that the Westkaai towers were rapidly climbing in the background, didn't really improve things. I'm a concrete lover, but this one, is just a damn shame. The harbour and docks used to be lovely. Now it's realestate heaven, and i don't think I'll be passing by so often. No more sitting on the side of the dock, on lazy warm summer nights, just chilling.

untill, not one hour ago, suddenly I realised... I had awoken the befmachine. The befmachine was a character Vitalski 'the illustrious nightmayor' came up with, almost 6 years ago. His brother serge drew the first one. and then some more. infected me too. So... I drew some... and then some more...

Nice big soft Dogtown wheels, for that ultra smooth ride, and the baby blu grindking setup for pinpoint accuracy. One brandnew skate coming up.

Seems like only yesterday when I'd go out in the morning, meet my crew (crew beeing a bunch of 9 year olds, spending their entire 2 month holiday rolling around on their skateboards, building jumps, falling hard,...) and going out for a complete day, with not a care in the world.

We skated everywhere, and everything.
It was the time when Hosoi, Alva, Hawk, Mcgill ... were our heroes.
they ruled supreme. Rails and tailbones were still dope, and the boards big. Summers were endless, the sun was always shining, and were having the time of our lives.

I burried my cat today.
She was 20 years old, and the coolest cat in the world. Her names was bilbo, and she used to attack my toes. My Mom and I picked a spot where she would pass every day, on her trips, to lay her to rest. At night, I would stand by the back door and whistle. And She'd come barreling down bushes and trees. storming to me. I touched her dead body. She was the softest cat to. I filled the hole with my hands, and dirt. It rained.
